Concrete is good at preventing compression but very weak at preventing tension. Therefore reinforcement is provided in the concrete where the tensile stress is expected. The best reinforcement is steel because the tensile strength of steel is very high and the bond between steel and concrete is good. Because the elastic modulus of steel is high, the resistivity of steel is higher compared to concrete for the same extension.
In the tension zone, however, hair cracking in concrete is not uncommon. Reinforcements are usually in the form of lightweight steel or ribbed steel bars with a diameter of 6 mm to 32 mm. The reinforcement cage is made according to the design requirements, placed in a formwork, and then poured with green concrete. Once the concrete has hardened, the formwork is removed. The composite material of steel and concrete is now R.C.C. Acts as a structural member and can withstand tensile and compressive stress well.
The reinforcement details of the slab are done based on its support conditions. The slab may be supported on walls or beams or pillars. The slab that directly supports the columns is called the flat slab. The slab is supported on both sides and the bending is done mainly in one direction, which is called a one-way slab.
